Fatality Traffic Incident on Avenue B - UPDATE

On Saturday, June 25th, 2011, at 11:27 P.M., Yuma Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the 1000 Block of S. Avenue B for a report of an injury traffic collision.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Chevrolet truck driven by Juan Miranda, 40 years old of Tucson, was northbound in the #1 lane on Avenue B. Miranda's front seat passenger was Angela Lagunas-Galavis, 38 years old of Tucson. As they were driving, Lagunas-Galavis exited the passenger door and fell into the roadway.  Lagunas-Galaviz was struck by a 2009 Pontiac sedan driven by Fantaysia Velasquez, 20 years old of Yuma, who was northbound in the #2 lane of Avenue B.

Lagunas-Galaviz was treated on scene by the Yuma Fide Department and transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center with life threatening injuries.  She was later flown to St. Josephs Hospital in Phoenix, AZ.

At about 9:00 A.M. on June 26th, 2011, Lagunas-Galaviz succumbed to her injuries.

Alcohol may have been a factor in this incident. A blood sample was obtained form Miranda in reference to this investigation; however there are no results at this time.

The incident remains under investigation and no criminal charges on anyone have been filed.
