Traffic Collision On 18th Avenue

On Friday, February 5th, 2010, at 1805 hrs, the Yuma Police Department responded to the 2600 Blk S. 18th Avenue for a report of an injury traffic collision.

On Friday, February 5th, 2010, at 1805 hrs, the Yuma Police Department responded to the 2600 Blk S. 18th Avenue for a report of an injury traffic collision.

Preliminary investigation shows a blue Honda Civic sedan driven by Jorge Ortega, 22 yr old, and a white BMW sedan driven by Angel Garcia, 17 yr old,  were racing northbound in the 2700 Blk S. 18th Avenue. While the vehicles were racing side by side, both vehicles collided into each which caused the vehicles to veer left. Both vehicles subsequently collided into the residences of 2696 S. 18th Avenue and 2682 S. 18th Avenue. The home owners of 2696 S. 18th Avenue were not at the residence at the time of the collision. The home owners were at 2682 S. 18th Avenue but were not injured.

Angel Garcia was transported to YRMC by Rural Metro for minor injuries. Jorge Ortega was treated at the scene by Yuma Fire Department personnel.

Jorge Ortega was booked in the Yuma County Adult Detention Center for; (1) Endangerment, (2) Criminal Damage and (3) Reckless Driving.  Angel Garcia was booked into the Yuma County Juvenile Justice Center for; (1) Endangerment, (2) Criminal Damage and (3) Reckless Driving. 

Yuma Fire Department and Yuma City Building Inspectors assisted with shoring up the front of 2696 S. 18th Avenue. The Red Cross also assisted the family with temporary housing needs. Estimated damages in excess of $30,000.
