Southwest Old Time Fiddlers Country Jam

Enjoy good, lively fiddle music when the Southwest Old Time Fiddlers Association presents their "Country Jam" at the Historic Yuma Theatre, 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5.   You can be sure it won't be long before toes will be tapping and hands will be clapping in this spirited, dynamic performance that's not to be missed.  Tickets for the performance are $5 at the door.  For further information, call 373-5202. The Southwest Old Time Fiddlers Association is an independent nonprofit organization of more than 85 members.

"Just Dance" - Jams Dance Studio And Guests

The talented dancers from JAMS Dance Studio will be dancing up a storm 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Historic Yuma Theatre as they present "Just Dance" - a high-energy, fun show featuring all styles of dance from jazz, tap, and ballet to modern, hip-hop, and lyrical.  In addition to the JAMS dancers special guests will perform including the San Luis Snake Charmers, Yuma Ballet Theatre, and Arizona Classical Ballet.  Tickets are $8 at the Yuma Art Center, 254 S. Main St., Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive, the Parks & Recreation office on the first floor of City Hall, and online at www.yumaaz.gov/events.  For further information, call 373-5202.

Senior Games Under Way

More than 30 different events are scheduled for this year's Senior Games, Jan. 15 through Feb. 25.  Registration fee is $9; it includes a Senior Games T-shirt (while supplies last), opening ceremonies, picnic lunch, and the novelty events that are held opening day along with an end of the games potluck lunch and slide show.  Also, a fee of $5 per event is required for each event for which you register.  Senior Games are open to individuals age 50 and up.  For more information and to register, stop in at the Parks & Recreation office or call 373-5243.

Sweetheart Canoe Trip

Here's a fresh idea for a Valentine date: Take your loved one on an exciting canoe trip down the Colorado River on Feb. 6.  When the journey ends and returns to the scenic West Wetlands, stay and enjoy a picnic with your fellow canoe enthusiasts. This canoe trip is for adults only at a cost of $20 per person.  Advance registration is required. Call 373-5243 for more information.

Touchdown, Boys!

Football rules at this crazy, fanatic party designed just for boys.  Make fun snacks with a sweet football theme, and head outside to throw the ball around.  The fun begins at 1 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Clymer Recreation Center, 553 S. Orange Ave.  The fee is $11 per child; please register with Yuma Parks & Recreation in person or by calling 373-5243.

Be My Valentine - Adaptive Rec

Adaptive Rec folks: Do you have a special someone you would like to do something special for?  Maybe a friend or family member?  Well, here's your chance to make Valentine gifts along with enjoying dinner and dancing too.  The fun will take place 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 at the Martin L. King Neighborhood Center, 3rd Street and 13th Avenue.  The fee is $9 for City residents.  This is an Adaptive Recreation event.  Call 373-5243 to register.

Women's Self-Defense Class Returns

Leading self-defense specialist Paul Henry Danylewich brings this powerful workshop to Yuma for one day only.  This class, geared towards women and teen girls will teach assertion and confidence through real life demonstrations.  Wear comfortable clothing and socks.  There are two classes to choose from.  The first one is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the second one is from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 6 at Clymer Recreation Center, 553 S. Orange Ave.  The cost is $26 per person.

Boys Baseball

The Yuma Boys Baseball League is now taking registration for their spring league.  Get your youngster involved in "America's favorite game" by registering them at Parks & Recreation.  A birth certificate is required for new players.  The cost is only $55, if you register by Jan. 28.  This league is open to boys ages 7 to 12.

Youth Fast Pitch And T-Ball

The Yuma Youth Fast Pitch and T-ball League is taking registration for their spring league.  YYFTL is open to boys and girls ages 4 to 6 and girls ages 7 to 14.  The registration is taking place at Parks & Recreation.  The cost ranges between $40 and $50 depending on the age of the participating child.  A birth certificate is required for all new players.  Games will be played April through June.

MLK Teen Center

Are you a teen looking for a cool place to hang out after school and on the weekends?  If so, we have the place for you.  The MLK Teen Center, 3rd Street and 13th Avenue, has foosball, ping pong, video games, billiards, art and cooking classes and more, all for your enjoyment.  It's only $8 for a year's membership and the center is open six days a week.  Come check it out or call 373-5234 for more information.

Bark Park Rules

The Bark Park is there for the health and enjoyment of the Yuma community and their dogs.  Unlike the other parks in Yuma, the Bark Park has some unique rules that must be followed to ensure everyone's safety and maximize enjoyment.  The Bark Park is located at 1705 E. Palo Verde St. in Yuma and is open from dawn until 9 p.m. every day but Tuesday.

Take Pride In Yuma

There were 129 cases of graffiti abated the week of Jan. 20  through Jan. 26, 2010. This compares with 80 cases the week before.

Graffiti cleanup and vandalism currently costs the Yuma taxpayers over $200,000 per year.  Please help us reduce vandalism by reporting incidences of crime to 78-Crime (782- 7463) and graffiti to the Graffiti Busters hot line, 329-2828.  If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.

Tickets to Art Center, Historic Theatre or Civic Center events can be purchased by phone, in person or online. The Art Center and theatre box office is located at 254 S. Main St., or call 373-5202. The Civic Center is located at 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive just off Avenue A at 36th Street, or call 373-5040. Tickets to shows at both locations are online at www.YumaAZ.gov/events.

Register for Parks and Recreation events, activities, classes, etc. online at www.YumaAZ.gov/ParksAndRecreation. Call 373-5200, or stop by the Parks and Recreation office on the first floor of City Hall, One City Plaza (between 1st and Madison avenues at Giss Parkway) between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. every other Friday (closed alternating Fridays).
