Weekend Events Advisory
A bluegrass music festival will be held as scheduled Saturday at the West Wetlands Park. Because of this, the park, including the Stewart Vincent Wolfe Creative Playground, is closed to the general public until Sunday. Keith Longbotham in Concert
Longtime Nashville entertainer Keith Longbotham and his trio will present an evening of music and fun at the Historic Yuma Theatre at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22. Songwriter, musician and instrumentalist Longbotham is most of all an entertainer: He can have his audience laughing hilariously throughout his show and leave them with tears in their eyes as he closes with a great gospel hymn. The upbeat show features a wide variety of music including country, bluegrass, popular music from all areas, gospel and patriotic, all seasoned with a generous helping of humor.

Slick Nickel in Concert
To the delight of their fans, Yuma's own Slick Nickel will take the stage at the Historic Yuma Theatre 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. Slick Nickel is Danny Wrenn, Jack Otero, Robby Carrillo and Jerry Rosner, four seasoned musicians who have roots in all styles of music and have all performed in several bands both locally and around the United States. Slick Nickel is known for traditional country music with an air of jazz and blues, much of it original. Slick Nickel will be joined by the Slick Nickel Dancers and the Deguello Gunslingers western re-enactment group. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the Yuma Art Center, 254 S. Senior Games Under Way
More than 30 different events are scheduled for this year's Senior Games, Jan. 15 through Feb. 25. Registration fee is $9; it includes a Senior Games T-shirt (while supplies last), opening ceremonies, picnic lunch, and the novelty events that are held opening day along with an end of the games potluck lunch and slide show. Also, a fee of $5 per event is required for each event for which you register. Senior Games are open to individuals age 50 and up. Touchdown, Boys!
Football rules at this crazy, fanatic party designed just for boys. Make fun snacks with a sweet football theme, and head outside to throw the ball around. The fun begins at 1 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Clymer Recreation Center, 553 S. Orange Ave. The fee is $11 per child; please register with Yuma Parks & Recreation in person or by calling 373-5243.
Be My Valentine - Adaptive Rec
Adaptive Rec folks: Do you have a special someone you would like to do something special for? Maybe a friend or family member? Well, here's your chance to make Valentine gifts along with enjoying dinner and dancing too. The fun will take place 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 at the Martin L. King Neighborhood Center, 3rd Street and 13th Avenue. The fee is $9 for City residents. This is an Adaptive Recreation event. Call 373-5243 to register.
Women's Self Defense Class Returns
Leading self-defense specialist Paul Henry Danylewich brings this powerful workshop to Yuma for one day only. This class, geared towards women and teen girls will teach assertion and confidence through real life demonstrations. Wear comfortable clothing and socks. There are two classes to choose from. The first one is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the second one is from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 6 at Clymer Recreation Center, 553 S. Orange Ave. The cost is $26 per person.
Boys Baseball
The Yuma Boys Baseball League is now taking registration for their spring league. Get your youngster involved in "America's favorite game" by registering them at Parks & Recreation. A birth certificate is required for new players. The cost is only $55, if you register by Jan. 28. This league is open to boys ages 7 to 12.
Youth Fast Pitch and T-Ball
The Yuma Youth Fast Pitch and T-ball League is taking registration for their spring league. YYFTL is open to boys and girls ages 4 to 6 and girls ages 7 to 14. The registration is taking place at Parks & Recreation. The cost ranges between $40 and $50 depending on the age of the participating child. A birth certificate is required for all new players. Games will be played April through June.
MLK Teen Center
Are you a teen looking for a cool place to hang out after school and on the weekends? If so, we have the place for you. The MLK Teen Center, 3rd Street and 13th Avenue, has foosball, ping pong, video games, billiards, art and cooking classes and more, all for your enjoyment. It's only $8 for a year's membership and the center is open six days a week. Come check it out or call 373-5234 for more information.
Bark Park Rules
This week's Bark Park rule reminder: Digging holes at the Bark Park is bad. Please don't allow your dog to dig holes at the Bark Park.
This week's Bark Park etiquette tip: The best dog parks are those whose users band together to create a sense of community, who use education, peer pressure and, when necessary, call in the appropriate authorities to help regulate those who won't follow the rules of etiquette and common sense.
The Bark Park is there for the health and enjoyment of the Yuma community and their dogs. Unlike the other parks in Yuma, the Bark Park has some unique rules that must be followed to ensure everyone's safety and maximize enjoyment. The Bark Park is located at 1705 E. Palo Verde St. in Yuma and is open from dawn until 9 p.m. every day but Tuesday.

Take Pride in Yuma
There were 96 cases of graffiti abated the week of Jan. 6 through Jan. 12, 2010.
Graffiti cleanup and vandalism currently costs the Yuma taxpayers over $200,000 per year. Please help us reduce vandalism by reporting incidences of crime to 78-Crime (782- 7463) and graffiti to the Graffiti Busters hot line, 329-2828. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.
