Night Work on 16th Street; Traffic Signal Work on Avenue A Intersections

16th Street Widening - ADOT Night Work, Lane and Turn Restrictions

ADOT crews are are scheduled to begin work on the storm drain system east of the Interstate 8 bridge on 16th Street.  Crews will intermittently close the northernmost (right westbound) lane on 16th Street, which is used for traffic turning westbound onto 16th Street from Yuma Palms Parkway.  These closures will take place during nighttime work hours between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday.  Work is scheduled Monday, Jan. 18 and Friday, Jan. 29 to complete installation of lateral storm drain pipes in the area.  Right turns onto 16th Street from Yuma Palms Parkway will still be allowed during lane closures.

Also, ADOT crews are working to complete the newly constructed storm drain system by installing lateral piping.  Lateral pipes run perpendicular underneath the roadway connecting to the main system on the south side of 16th Street.  As a result of this work, 16th Street will be reduced to two lanes during the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday.  Left turns from 16th Street onto Arizona and Riley Avenues will also be prohibited during these nighttime work hours.  This work is anticipated to be complete by Friday, Jan. 23.

During daytime work hours, four lanes will be open to traffic as well as left turns onto Arizona and Riley Avenues.

During the week of Jan. 18, crews will begin to drill the support shafts along the north side of 16th Street for the widened railroad bridge.  This work includes drilling large holes, stabilizing with steel rebar, and filling with a concrete mixture.  Work is being conducted off the roadway and is not anticipated to affect traffic.

For more information, call the project hot line at 1-877-397-5202, e-mail 16thStreetWidening@azdot.gov or visit http://www.16thStreetWidening.com/ (This link will take you to an external website that is not part of the City of Yuma official website.)

Avenue A Widening

Traffic signal work will be required in the intersections that bookend the Avenue A widening project.  Possibly as soon as this Saturday, crews could begin working in the 24th Street and Avenue A intersection, resulting in lane closures and left-turn restrictions as crews move from section to section.  In the upcoming week, traffic signal work will move to the 16th Street and Avenue A intersection.

Elsewhere, curbing and sidewalk work is taking place on the west side of Avenue A between 16th and 24th streets.  Westbound traffic cannot cross from Avenue A onto residential streets between 16th Street and 19th Street.

The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street.  Businesses along Avenue A are open as usual and can be suitably accessed from Avenue A. Currently estimated time frame for completion is winter 2010.

Casa Manana Improvements

The Casa Manana Neighborhood Reconstruction Project consists of placing a storm drain system, removing and replacing the street lighting, removing the existing pavement and placing new pavement. Additionally, speed humps will be placed on Camino Alameda to mitigate existing problems with speeders.

32nd Street and East Main Canal - Qwest

Qwest work will result in a brief closure of the right westbound lane of 32nd Street in the vicinity of the East Main Canal (between avenues A and B) for approximately one month.
