8/13/2010The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is a collaboration of resources between the Yuma Police Department, YUHSD #70, Yuma District One, and the Crane School District in an effort to reduce crime, drug abuse, violence, and provide a safe school environment.
The goal of an SRO is to become ingrained in the lives of the youth of the community in order to fulfill our three-fold approach to Community Oriented Policing. The SRO program began in Flint, Michigan in the 1950’s. Today you can find SRO’s throughout the country. The SRO is specifically trained to perform three roles: law enforcement officer, law-related counselor, and law-related education teacher. The SRO is in a unique position to make a significant impact on today’s youth. The SRO helps to generate a positive understanding of the law enforcement community, and promotes good citizenship through daily interaction with the students. The SRO is professional, polite, respectful, and firm when required, and serves as a positive role model for the students.
SRO's are currently serving at the following Yuma schools.
Some of the SRO’s are part of a grant supporting the Arizona Foundation of Legal Services and Education. This Organization provides grant officers to schools whose primary duty is to teach law related classes to students. You can look up more on this program at their website: AZFLSE.
The Yuma Police Department is also proud to be part of Industrial Education Program, or I.C.E., through the Skills USA curriculum. Each high school SRO has up to 5 students who participate in this program each year.
