Gang Unit

The mission of the Yuma Police Department’s Gang Unit is to improve the quality of life in the community by identifying local street gangs, their memberships and associates, and by developing methods to lessen their impact on the community.

The Gang Unit was formed as a full time unit June 1, 2001.  Two patrol officers were appointed as gang enforcement officers.  In a partnership with the United States Border Patrol, a U.S. Border Patrol Agent was paired with each Gang Enforcement Officer.  The Unit has maintained this relationship with the U.S. Border Patrol since its formation.

The Gang Unit supports the Mission Statement and Values of the City of Yuma and Yuma Police Department.  They utilize various strategies in their gang interdiction efforts, including preliminary and follow-up investigation, proactive and preventative special details, as well as community policing and education.  They work closely with School Resource Officers, Probation Officers and other agencies in their efforts.

In July 2005, the Gang Unit was authorized an increase of two more officers.  A total of four Yuma Police Officers and two U.S. Border Patrol Agents now comprise the Gang Unit.  They are assigned to the Investigations Bureau, and although they are assigned a core shift in uniform, they frequently work with the prosecutors and the judicial system conducting case follow-up and prosecution.
